The protect site is located within the suburbof Heathmont, outer east Melbourne. A notable feature of the suburb is the amountof canopy trees which it contains. Our design approach seeks to enhance theconnection between the interior and exteriorspaces. To achieve this we introduced courtyards, and pockets of green that break upthe building form and provide a focus. Through the integration of green spaces and adaptable living areas that seamlessly open to the outside, the house becomes an extension of the garden itself, offering a sense of openness and constant connection to nature in everyday life.

Alongside the idea of enhancing the relationshipbetween the interior and exterior space is theprovision of a lounge and dining area that has aphysical connection to the outdoors. This can then be used as an entertaining spacewhen guests are visiting, or just to open up thehouse on a hot evening when the family is athome and feel the connection to nature. With the introduction of extended eaves someof the outdoor space can still be utilised on awarm evening even if it is raining.

The form of the proposed concept emerges from dividing the house block lengthways, resulting in two distinct zones: public and private. The public zone includes the entry, living area, open kitchen and dining space, along with a series of courtyards. In contrast, the private zone houses the bedrooms, office, art studio, and bathrooms.
